Is The Person In The Mirror Prepared?

May 4, 2023

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

May 2, 2023

Do you know what is coming? Do you have the mettle to persevere under demanding circumstances being foisted upon us by stealth or deceit?

You may not know the cause of every situation such as empty grocery shelves; sky rocketing fuel prices; and supply line shortages. You hear about wars and rumors of wars. There is a full court press to have you believe right is wrong, up is down and your values are offensive. This is not new; the first recorded time it started was in the Garden of Eden.

Many times throughout history the same thing happen.

There was Job:

“Job is a wealthy man living in a land called Uz with his large family and extensive flocks. He is “blameless” and “upright,” always careful to avoid doing evil (1:1). One day, Satan (“the Adversary”) appears before God in heaven. God boasts to Satan about Job’s goodness, but Satan argues that Job is only good because God has blessed him abundantly. Satan challenges God that, if given permission to punish the man, Job will turn and curse God. God allows Satan to torment Job to test this bold claim, but he forbids Satan to take Job’s life in the process.

In the course of one day, Job receives four messages, each bearing separate news that his livestock, servants, and ten children have all died due to marauding invaders or natural catastrophes. Job tears his clothes and shaves his head in mourning, but he still blesses God in his prayers. Satan appears in heaven again, and God grants him another chance to test Job. This time, Job is afflicted with horrible skin sores. His wife encourages him to curse God and to give up and die, but Job refuses, struggling to accept his circumstances. “(1)

“The interaction between Job and his friends illustrates the painful irony of his situation. Our knowledge that Job’s punishment is the result of a contest between God and Satan contrasts with Job’s confusion and his friends’ lecturing, as they try to understand why Job is being punished. The premise of the friends’ argument is that misfortune only follows from evil deeds. Bildad instructs Job, “if you are pure and upright, / surely then [God] will rouse himself / for you” and he later goads Job to be a “blameless person” (8:6, 8:20). The language in these passages is ironic, since, unbeknownst to Job or Job’s friends; God and Satan do in fact view Job as “blameless and upright.” This contrast shows the folly of the three friends who ignore Job’s pain while purporting to encourage him. The interaction also shows the folly of trying to understand God’s ways. The three friends and Job have a serious theological conversation about a situation that actually is simply a game between God and Satan. The fault of Job and his friends lies in trying to explain the nature of God with only the limited information available to human knowledge, as God himself notes when he roars from the whirlwind, “Who is this that darkness counsel / by words without / knowledge?” (38:2).” (1)

Book of Job Summary: A Complete Animated Overview

You may feel more like  Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego from the Bible book of Daniel 3 which tells us of three young men who refused to bow down to the King of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar.

The three men grew wise and respected as highly appointed officials in Babylon. Other Babylonian officials who were jealous of the Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego could get King Nebuchadnezzar to command that all people bow down to a golden statue. When the three young men refused to bow down and worship the idol and god of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar had them thrown into the fiery furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego had faith that God would save them. When King Nebuchadnezzar looked into the fire, he saw four men walking around in the furnace unharmed –  Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego, and the Son of God. King Nebuchadnezzar brought the young men out of the flames, promoted them to a higher office, and decreed that the God of Israel be worshipped. (2)

Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NKJV)

9 That which has been is what will be,

That which is done is what will be done,

And there is nothing new under the sun.

You have choices. The choices you make on this side of eternity determine where you spend the rest of eternity.

You can read the same end of the book to see we win, Revelation.

You can have the mettle to persevere under demanding circumstances being foisted upon us by stealth or deceit by making the right choices.

Together we will get through this.

Say yes to Jesus, He saves. There is no better plan than God’s plan.

Esther For Such A Time As Then And Today

April 6, 2023

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

April 1, 2023

A brave woman who saved the Jews from extinction and the way for the Messiah to bring Salvation is known as Esther. Esther is written for all history in a Book of Bible named after her.

The Book of Esther is read on the festival of Purim, which commemorates the rescue of the Jews from Haman’s plots. The Book of Esther is one of the Megillot, five scrolls read on stated Jewish religious holidays.

Her becoming Queen was necessitated because of the disobedience of Queen Vashti. Jesus the second Adam was necessitated because the first Adam disobeyed. God does not want anyone to perish.

A central purpose of the Book of Esther is to record the institution of the annual festival of Purim and to keep alive for later generations the memory of the great deliverance of the Jewish people during the reign of Xerxes. The book accounts for both the initiation of that observance and the obligation for its perpetual commemoration.

Esther is represented as an orphan daughter of the tribe of Benjamin, who had spent her life among the Jewish exiles in Persia, where she lived under the protection of her cousin Mordecai. The grand vizier, Haman the Agagite, commanded Mordecai to do obeisance to him. Upon Mordecai’s refusal to prostrate himself, Haman informed the king that the Jews were a useless and turbulent people and inclined to disloyalty, and he promised to pay 10,000 silver talents into the royal treasury for the permission to pillage and exterminate this alien race. The king then issued a proclamation ordering the confiscation of Jewish property and a general extermination of all the Jews within the empire. Haman set by lot the day for this outrage but Mordecai persuaded Esther to undertake the deliverance of her compatriots. (1)

Haman devised a plot to exterminate the Jews and hang Mordecai. Haman saw Mordecai as a threat to Haman’s power grab. Haman had the gallows built in the public square. Haman expected to be paraded in the public square as a hero. Through a series of events, that could be a thriller movie today, the plot was exposed and it was Mordecai who was paraded through the streets and it was Haman who was hung on the gallows which Haman built.

God will complete the work he started through us as He did with Esther and Mordecai. God gave us boldness and not fear.

What is God calling you to do? We may never know what our part might be in God’s larger plan.  I would say Esther was not thinking of the coming Messiah when she risked death for approaching the King without an invitation.

Say yes to Jesus, He saves. There is no better plan than God’s plan.

Be Like A Raisin

March 2, 2023

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

February 28, 2023

Why would you want to be like a wrinkled raisin?

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJ)

These are the words the Lord spoke to Samuel after he had arrived at the house of Jesse, where he had gone, following God’s word to him, in order to anoint the next king of Israel.

When Samuel first entered and saw Jesse’s son, Eliab, He thought, “surely the Lord’s anointed is before him” (1 Samuel 16: 7), which provoked God to speak these words about how He sees things differently, from the heart.

Jesse proceeded to show off seven sons to Samuel, and none of these were God’s anointed. Jesse obviously thought his youngest son, David, was so out of the running to be God’s anointed that he had left him out in the field tending sheep.

How was Jesse to realize that, in God’s eyes, He would much prefer a humble young tender of sheep any day over a proud and cocky string of seven sons?

Neither Samuel nor Jesse understood what God was truly looking for in His anointed.

Some might think they are prefect human beings…none are.

Each of us has talents and personalities unique to us. We are expected to use them in a way which makes life better than we found it.  We should want to be freshly baked bread instead of week old moldy bread for those around us.

Those around us will judge us in the moment. If we are having a bad moment even if we’ve done everything else right, it is the screenshot in time for which we will be remembered.  For some people we will be the only Bible some people will read.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. Matthew 5:13 (NKJ)

Like other dried fruits, raisins are very sweet. They have a sticky consistency and because they were once grapes, the inside of raisins can be quite moist. Raisins that have become overdry can have a gritty texture.

Raisins can be revitalized and be re-moisturized if they dry out.

Raisins are dried grapes. The drying process concentrates both the nutrients and sugars present in grapes, making raisins nutrient-dense and calorie-dense.

Raisins originated in the Middle East before making their way to Europe, where they were especially popular among the Greeks and Romans.

Historically, raisins were used as currency, as awards in sporting events, and to treat ailments like food poisoning.

Raisins, sultanas, and currants have similar nutritional qualities. All are rich in antioxidants – substances that help your cells fight harmful molecules called free radicals. And they’re all good sources of:

•        Iron

•        Potassium

•        Copper

•        Vitamin B6

•        Manganese

Raisins also contain boron. This mineral helps maintain good bone and joint health, can improve wound healing, and may improve cognitive performance.

We, like raisins and fresh bread, are to be a good aroma to the world around us. Like raisins we can provide good nutritional qualities to those around us. We may get a few wrinkles on the outside and still retain the goodness on the inside.  We can stand alone in a crowd when needed and be the salt and light. We should be part of the solution in this world which some are trying to devolve into chaos.

Doing The Right Thing

February 2, 2023

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

30 January 2023

It’s always good to do the right thing.

I watched an older couple as they waited for the bus. A homeless lady in her 30s walked passed the bus stop. The couple was sitting waiting for the bus with their grocery bags.  The homeless lady engaged the couple in conversation as she was hungry and seeking food. The couple offered her some food items from their grocery shopping. The homeless lady ripped open the offered food packaging and ate as if she had not eaten in days. The homeless lady ate, was grateful and went on her way. The couple probably did more than most would have when they did the right thing and helped the homeless lady.  The couple could have an angel to the homeless lady. I had not seen the three of them before or since.

Great Molasses Flood, disaster in Boston that occurred after a storage tank collapsed on January 15, 1919, sending more than two million gallons of molasses flowing through the city’s North End. The molasses careened through the street at over 30 mph, sweeping away railcars, buildings, people and animals. The deluge caused extensive damage and killed 21 people and 150 injured.

Suddenly, the riveted bolts holding the bottom of the tank exploded, shooting out like bullets, and the hot molasses rushed out. The bolts and molasses collapsed the over trains uprights and the first floor of a nearby firehouse.

The storage tank was made with undersize steel and rushed to meet a wartime deadline. The person overseeing the construction only had a finance background. The Great Molasses Flood disaster was cause by people not doing the right thing; they should have taken more care in designing, building with the proper materials and had proper construction oversight.

Chernobyl was another engineering disaster that affected other countries as the weather carried contaminates to other continents. Had they done the right thing Chernobyl would have been engineered better and the situation been addressed early and the damage could have been averted or contained.

The Coconut Grove Fire Disaster was estimated that more than 1000 persons were inside the Grove at the time of the fire. As with the Melody Lounge, panic ensued and customers attempted to find an exit. Unfortunately, many exits were either locked shut or were not easily indentified or accessed by the crowd. The fire now had complete control of the premises, with a tremendous rise in temperature and high levels of toxic gas. Observers outside could only watch in horror as relatives and friends were crushed by the weight of the crowd surging against the jammed door.

The Fire Department initially went to the wrong location. The small, congested streets in the area of the Grove quickly became clogged with fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles. The fire was extinguished in a matter of minutes, but the damage had already been done. Rescue operations began immediately, but the full horror of what awaited the firefighters inside the building was not fully realized for a period of time. Many patrons who were able to exit under their own power collapsed in the street and stacks of bodies, both living and dead, were buried shoulder-high at many of the exits. Getting inside to help proved nearly as difficult as getting out.

A busboy thought he was doing the right thing by using a match to check a bulb on a tree, instead started the disaster by lighting the tree on fire which ignited the ceiling.  If the owner had done the right thing the exits would not have been locked or blocked saving many lives.

Today we have an ever increasing amount people who go out of their way to harm others in the name of power and control, just like an abuser, a bully, in attempt to destroy our way of life. On purpose they are doing the wrong thing as they try to destroy our way of life.

Just because someone else does not do the right thing that does not mean you are relieved of your responsibility to do the right thing.

Together we can right the ship by doing the right thing.

Successful Leadership

January 5, 2023

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

3 January 2023

There are leaders and there are followers. The best leaders know how to follow. In a group there can be several leaders. Among a group of leaders there is still one who sets course, directs and motivates others to accomplish the shared goals of the group. The leader clearly articulates the shared goals in perhaps three bullets points, rather than a treatise.   The shared goals are easily understand to be the best way forward.

To paraphrase W.C.H. Prentice: effective leaders take a personal interest in the long term development of their group, and they use tact and other social skills to encourage others to achieve their best. It isn’t about being “nice” or “understanding”, it’s about tapping into individual motivations in the interest of furthering an organization wide goal. (1)

In its simplest form, leadership is influencing other people to follow. Therefore, anyone who can influence people to follow them has leadership qualities.

Leadership happens at all levels within groups, organizations and society, not just among those who work in defined “leadership positions.”

Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal.

Leadership involves making sound, and sometimes difficult, decisions, creating and articulating a clear vision, establishing achievable goals and providing followers with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve those goals.

Leaders should not possess or display power; force or the threat of harm to enter into his dealings (1). Leaders can not expect others to willing follow him if he has just waged a campaign against that member to prevent that member from being a part of that group.

Revenge and grudges are not favored qualities of successful leaders.

Leaders who retaliate in kind or degree for having a different opinion are not trusted and don’t earn mutual respect and loyalty.

Leaders who carry a grudge and have a feeling of deep seated resentment or ill will toward another member would have a very difficult time encouraging the other member.  It has been said those who carry a grudge are drinking the poison they meant for the other member.

How long would you stick around someone who constantly berates you in public or private or behind your back.

We generally like leaders would understand us and our situation and posses the peace and strength to accomplish what needs to be done while bringing people together.

We generally don’t like and don’t trust cheaters, backbiters, liars or bullies.  Those who lie, cheat, steal their way their way into a position of leadership are really no better than domestic terrorists.

When it is time to choose leaders choose wisely.

In the event a liar or cheater steals their way their way into a position of leadership there is usually proscribed way to remove them. We live in a Constitutional Republic not under a dictatorship.  Dictators usually lie, cheat, steal their way their way into a position of leadership.

When it is time to choose leaders choose wisely and listen to God’s guidance.

Truth Bubbles Up

December 1, 2022

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

November 29, 2022

Sometimes no matter how hard you try the Truth just falls out of the mouth.  We have been witnessing an enormous amount of censorship and suppression of speech, thought, and even the most fundamental part of our Constitutional Republic, our vote.

Remember Ben Franklin upon exiting the signing of the Constitution was asked by a woman: “What have you given us?” to which Ben Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

“I vote yes under duress. I found out today that I have no choice but to vote aye or I’ll be arrested. I don’t think that is what our founders had in mind when they used the democratic process to elect our leaders and form a self government. I find that very disheartening.” – Mohave County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Gould

“I will vote to certify this canvass under duress for the chaos Maricopa County has foisted into our election process.” Mohave County Supervisor Hildy Angius

“Let me be clear, if any Arizona County fails to follow the law and to timely certify the election results, they will be sued. The Board members in Mohave should go ask their buddies in Cochise about how that worked out for them.” – Radical Leftist Activist Attorney Marc Elias

County Commissioners in Arizona are being openly intimidated by the full weight and power of the US government. Activist Democrat Attorney Marc Elias has been busy, intimidating, threatening, and committing widespread election lawfare across the nation.

Many states are pushing for radical resolutions such as federal HR1 or the National Popular Vote Compact — which make state election oversight as ceremonial as Elias and his radical leftist pals claim that County election oversight is today. Soon, elections will be a solely national affair, Constitution be damned. (1)

By fomenting and spreading hate and fear using intimidation, media, and lawfare the people’s voice is silenced and the individual vote is eradicated.

In the 2016 we experienced a sampling of what has been used for used in other countries to install a more favorable client in office for a select group. In 2020 voters watched in disbelief as they were repeatedly told it was wrong to believe your eyes and common sense.  Fear, anxiety, and depression increased as people were banned, shunned, and jailed for exercising their Constitutionally protected First Amendment Rights in the Pulpit, in their home, or in public. That is the stuff that tyrants do.

Many a culture has been destroyed from within, the most famous of which may be the once great Roman Empire of which much has been written.

Rulers and leaders from the beginning of time are known to be either good or bad depending upon their actions, actions speak louder than words.

Then the 2022 midterm elections showed up with a full array of heroes opposed by despotic, corrupt, illegal, treasonous, Unconstitutional actions of people and organizations that hate our Constitutional Republic and want to destroy it. Those who did not quite understand or believe the corruption and rigging of 2020 were hit smack in the face with a 2022 reality version, 2020 on steroids. Then there are those corrupt people who hid in shadows before exposing themselves in full colors in 2022. These crooks were so convinced they would get away with the latest steal that they made little or no effort to hide their illegal actions.

If they have not yet learned, they will. “For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.” Mark 4:22

The truth always rises to the top, just like our bodies expel foreign objects, even through the skin at times. The corrupt and treasonous actions will come to light and be judged on this side of eternity and the next, writing history each step of the way.

“The Truth usually includes unexpected complications” John MacArthur

“Most importantly, pro-family advocates say changing legal definitions cannot alter the fundamental truths embedded in marriage and family life by another Lawgiver. “We know what is right. We know what is true. Whether by the Court or by the Congress, truth cannot be altered,”  Family Research Council President Tony Perkins concluded. “We need to have the courage to stand for it, remembering the words of the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, ‘and having done all … stand firm.’”

You have choices in making your history. You also have a choice as to where you want to spend the rest of eternity.

You might find the following instructive.

Do your part today; the country you save may be your own.

How Solid Are Your Principles?

November 3, 2022

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

November 1, 2022

What are you made of when the rubber meets the road? I’m not talking about what posts or memes you forward or like. Your core principles are your foundation. If your foundation is built on quicksand you’ll be swallowed up or washed away with a few tears.

When the door closes and you are alone, when it is just you and God your principles are clear. Acting in accordance with your principles, especially when go are going against the heard or mob mentality can take courage.

Courage is not the absence of fear it is acting in spite of fear.

There are many throughout history who have made a difference by not following the crowd. Instead, they choose to act with courage in accordance with their principles.

Noah was chosen by God to save humanity, not because he was perfect, rather because his principles where in line with God’s. Noah did not ask friends or a focus group to determine whether building an Ark was needed or the right thing to do. God spoke, Noah listen, then followed God’s directions.  The Titanic was built with money as the goal without God and it sunk on it’s its first voyage. At the time Noah built the Ark it had never rained before.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles saves lives, as did Noah or Daniel Ellsberg with the Pentagon Papers.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles means you return an overpayment.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles means your resume is factual even if it means you are not accepted for a position for which you are unqualified or did not rightfully attain.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles gets a SWAT raid, such as Right to Lifers who stand up for the Rights of the Unborn.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles empowers you to be an investigative reporter exposing dirty deeds others would like to keep hidden such as James Gordon Meek.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles help you found a new country replacing a tyrannical king with a Republic. A Republic where your Rights are retained no matter what a mob may think. A democracy is where your rights are subject to the will of the mob.

Mobs are often driven by fear, anxiety, and a foundation based on quicksand.  Mobs cause needless deaths, destruction, fear, anxiety and suicides.

The American Founding Fathers rejected the oppression of the past, and established the American republic on our First Principles to secure our freedom and liberty.

We are the first, perhaps the only nation that holds as self-evident truths that all men and women are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; and that governments are instituted to protect those rights and derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. (1)

Principles are not the same as beliefs, beliefs can change.

Principle is a noun that means a fundamental truth or moral beliefs.

Belief is an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists.

Today we still have people who dig for the truth and don’t accept what the mob says.

It appears that in Brazilian election a few days ago exhibited actions of a certain group which changes election results. The current Brazilian President had the benefits of Arizona Audits and the work of others’ similar work. The current Brazilian President has the support of the people, truckers, and police. The current Brazilian President acting in accordance with his principles has activated the military to conduct a full audit.

Here in the United States there are several groups working on a similar line with our elections. One such group acting in accordance with their principles has already help secure the indictment and arrest of voting machine CEO. The name of that group is True The Vote. As you can imagine certain people are highly incensed that truth is being made known. At this writing the CEO and the lead investigator, a sample of their work can be seen in 2000 Mules, sit in a Federal Prison for not revealing their source.

Sometimes acting in accordance with your principles may not be comfortable and is the right thing to do.

Doing the right thing is the right thing to do.

Hang Up and You’ll Miss The Blessings

October 6, 2022

By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

3 October 2022

Instead of deciding the ending before you have heard it…stay on the line.

Jacob, the father of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, was no angel. Among other things, deep-seated family hostilities characterized Jacob’s life. He was a determined man; some would consider him to be ruthless. He was a con artist, a liar, and a manipulator. In fact, the name Jacob not only means “deceiver,” but more literally it means “grabber.”

Jacob tricked his father, with his mother’s help, into giving him the blessings and wealth which belonged to his brother Esau. Jacob was returning from his years on the run and was about to meet his brother, Esau, who had vowed to kill him. All Jacob’s struggles and fears were about to be realized. Sick of his father-in-law’s treatment, Jacob had fled Laban, only to encounter his embittered brother, Esau. Anxious for his very life, Jacob concocted a bribe and sent a caravan of gifts along with his women and children across the River Jabbok in hopes of pacifying his brother. Now physically exhausted, alone in the desert wilderness, facing sure death, he was divested of all his worldly possessions. In fact, he was powerless to control his fate. He collapsed into a deep sleep on the banks of the Jabbok River. With his father-in-law behind him and Esau before him, he was too spent to struggle any longer.

But only then did his real struggle begin. Fleeing his family history had been bad enough; wrestling with God Himself was a different matter altogether. That night an angelic stranger visited Jacob. They wrestled throughout the night until daybreak, at which point the stranger crippled Jacob with a blow to his hip that disabled him with a limp for the rest of his life. It was then that Jacob realized what had happened: “I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared” (Genesis 32:30). In the process, Jacob the deceiver received a new name, Israel, which likely means: “He struggles with God.” However, what is most important occurred at the conclusion of that struggle. We read that God “blessed him there” (Genesis 32:29). (1)

Don’t hang up as David, Solomon, and Jesus came from the line of Judah. Judah is one of Jacob’s twelve sons. Each of Jacob’s twelve sons was a Patriarch’s of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. If Jacob left his wrestle with God early then he could have missed many Blessing including being in Jesus’ family tree. Jacob was also able to mentor his children and grandchildren as they lived in close proximity as was the common practice.

David was called a man after God’s heart and he was no angel. David took another man’s wife, had her husband killed in battle and had a baby with her. David had his encounter with God and repented, Psalm 51. David went on to do more great and mighty things for God. Don’t hang up as David united the twelve tribes into a nation and mentored his offspring. Jesus came from the line of David.

“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” 1 Corinthians 1:27

God did not call the equipped, He equipped the called to complete God’s mission.

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

“For … God … is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” Hebrews 4:12

Multi generational mentoring had been the norm up until modern times. On occasion you’ll discover families practicing multi generational mentoring as highlighted in a new book titled “The Mentor I Never Met: Lessons on Life and Business from John Capobianco” (2).  Multi generational mentoring is a good way to counter anti-God, Anti family indoctrination.

If you hang up early you won’t hear the rest of the story, you’ll be left with incomplete facts and miss Blessings. If you want to judge something at least listen to the other points of view first. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, just not their own set of facts.

Don’t hang up, especially during your encounter with God; you’ll miss the rest of the story and the Blessings.

Gone Off The Rails

September 1, 2022

Most people prefer a balance. When things go out of balance trouble begins. When your tire goes out of round or begins to separate, steering can be difficult. If you are driving on the highway, even at the speed limit, and your out of round or separating tire has a failure it could cause a blow out.  Your car could end up in a ditch flipped over, on its side, or upright. You could roll over multiple times before your car comes to rest in a ditch or in the lanes of traffic.  That out of round or separated should have been discovered by the way the car handled and replaced before it caused an untold number of injuries, damages, and perhaps deaths.

A commuter train which hits something on the tracks or crosses a defective rail can derail causing an untold number of injuries, damages, and perhaps deaths. Railroads regularly inspect their rails.

At the first sign of trouble fear, anxiety, and other signs of danger begin to manifest themselves. Some will be treated for PTSD after a bad tire blowout, train derailment or other trauma.

Go off the rails is an idiom that has been in use for over one hundred years. An idiom is a word, group of words or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is not easily deduced from its literal definition

Let’s examine the meaning of the expression go off the rails, where it came from and its use in sentences.

To go off the rails means to behave in an abnormal way, to act in an insane manner or highly unpredictable or illogical manner. When applied to a situation or institution, the idiom go off the rails may mean that things have gotten out of control or have careened into unexpected or unmanageable territory.

The phrase go off the rails has been in use since the mid-1800s and is a reference to a train derailment. When a train goes off the rails it is no longer progressing along its preordained track and is uncontrollable and chaotic.

Today, the mental picture conjured by the idiom go off the rails is most probably of a roller coaster car leaving its track. The first commercial roller coaster was installed at Coney Island, New York, in the 1880s.

The idiom go off the rails predates that. Related phrases are goes off the rails, went off the rails, going off the rails. (1)

Here are some examples:

The residents of Hollyoaks gather for the funeral of tragic teen Lily McQueen, who lost her life earlier this month when she died from sepsis as a result of wounds from her self-harming addiction, and it appears no one is struggling with the loss more than her husband Prince McQueen (Malique Thompson-Dwyer) who starts to go off the rails as he’s gripped by grief. (2)

“Let me just say, I’m very, very dismayed and disappointed that the chief law enforcement officer of our country is going off the rails yesterday and today,” Pelosi told reporters at a news conference in Virginia. (3)

As we start to chat, the members of the vivacious vocal trio Diva Station warn me that our conversation about their first major concert, with the subtitle Songs Through the Ages might go off the rails.  (4)

In an abnormal or malfunctioning condition, as in Her political campaign has been off the rails for months. The phrase occurs commonly with go, as in Once the superintendent resigned, the effort to reform the school system went off the rails. This idiom alludes to the rails on which trains run; if a train goes off the rails, it stops or crashes. [Mid-1800s] (5)

It could be easily said that many in the world have gone off the rails by their actions or reactions to other people or events. For awhile people where told to ignore common sense and not to believe what you see and hear, that if there was something wrong, it was you. The media had a strong hand in gas lighting us and for awhile it was working until it didn’t.

One day parents realized off the rails agenda school boards and teachers were ramming filth down their child’s throats. Parents where told they had no say in what is being taught in the classroom. Parents were arrested and harassed by various agencies, until parents started replacing school board members at the ballot box.  For awhile it was working until it didn’t.

Children are a Blessing from God and should be treated as such. Children are our future leaders, train them to walk uprightly and we’ll have good leaders in our future.

Regularly check to keep the balance to stay on the rails.

Faith, Tested and Tried

August 4, 2022

2 August 2022 By Reverend Paul N. Papas II

Everyday you are Blessed with another day above the grass is another opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade.

Medical missionary Bruce Olson was captured by Columbian communists in October 1988. He was beaten and kept bound most of the time. The soldiers were waiting for a ransom, but the mission wouldn’t pay. Olson endured pain by concentrating on the spirit and doing God’s will in his current situation. He was tortured but able to influence the guerrillas by teaching and healing them.

After a while they even let him conduct worship services. They couldn’t understand how he could pay back evil with good. Olson was able to lead some of them to the Lord. While very ill a bird sang outside, reminding him of how the Motilone Indians sang the Scriptures. When the soldiers could not break him they apologized and released him.

Certainly through Bruce Olson’s ordeal during his time of capture he could have experienced fear, anxiety, depression, or even suicidal thoughts. Perhaps he could have suffered from PTSD. Bruce Olson chose to exhibit Faith as a Mustard Seed (Matthew 17:20) and submit to God and watch the devil fled (James 4: 7-8)

We are on a pilgrimage which is a step-by-step process.

It’s like a hiker on a narrow mountainside trail, unable to see the path ahead. Sometimes the way is clearly marked out before him. At other times, it turns abruptly to the right or left, becomes rugged or muddy, rises or falls sharply. All he knows is that he must take the next step.

But our spiritual walk of faith differs from that of a mountain hiker. Through faith in Christ, we can keep moving forward with full confidence that we will reach our destination.

This anonymous poem describes the walk of faith:

When you come to the edge

Of all light you have known,

And are about to step off into darkness,

Faith is knowing there’ll be something to stand on,

Or you will be taught how to fly.

Perhaps today you are right at the rim of a shadowy unknown. You know you must move forward, but you can’t see 10 feet ahead. God has brought you to this place not to abandon you but to show you–perhaps as never before–that you can trust Him completely.

Go ahead. Prayerfully step into the unknown future. God has promised to be there for you (Heb. 13:5). You can be sure “there’ll be something to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.” –DCE

Faith is not a leap into the dark but a step into the light.

An old lady in England who had stood the bombings with amazing fortitude was asked the secret of her calmness in the midst of such frightful danger. She replied, “Well, every night I says my prayers and then I remembers how the parson told us God is always watching; so I go to sleep. After all, there’s no need for both of us to stay awake!”

William Moses Tidwell, “Pointed Illustrations.”

How many lemons have you come across today? How many lemons have you turned into lemonade today?
